The Machines Arena

A fast-paced 4v4 top-down shooter where I developed immersive narratives and lore that deepened player engagement and enriched the game’s universe.

Platforms: PC, Android, PS5

Role: Narrative Designer
Contribution: Lore Development, Scriptwriting, Collaboration, High-level game design docs.

Highlights include:

  • World-Building: Designed the Dominators faction, including their prophecy and covert operations through the URA.
  • Scriptwriting for Trailers: Wrote the launch trailer script, working closely with animators, a videographer, and sound designers to ensure the narrative aligned with visuals and sound effects.
  • Collaborative Storytelling: Partnered with developers to tie key story moments into gameplay for an engaging player experience.

The Machines Arena - Open Beta Trailer

For this trailer, I collaborated with a creative team, including a videographer, to craft a compelling narrative that blends lore with the announcement of the open beta and Android launch. The process involved:

  • Defining the Narrative Voice: Writing from the Dominators’ first-person perspective, with a robotic voice that conveys their cold, mechanical authority.
  • Structuring the Script: Using timecoded segments to guide pacing, the script introduces the prophecy, covert operations, and the rebellion (Paragon) while building intrigue.
  • Focusing on Tone and Impact: Carefully chosen language reflects the Dominators’ inevitability, paired with pauses and moments designed for dramatic visuals and sound.
  • Collaborating with the Team: Worked closely with animators, sound designers, and a videographer to align the script with cinematic visuals and audio that bring the story and launch announcement to life.

The Machines Arena World Building

Here’s an example of how I developed one of the regions in The Machines Arena. I start by drafting key questions each region must answer: What faction or characters are involved? What is the setting? What key events take place? From there, I arrange and rearrange these elements to explore connections and refine the region’s structure.

I use image references from our world to add depth and help visualise the atmosphere and architecture.  It helps foster my creativity and keeps my ideas fluid while maintaining a cohesive vision

These characters from The Machines Arena have backstories, characteristics, and personalities that I carefully redesigned to build onto an existing world. Each redesign focused on adding depth and unique traits to enrich their narratives.

Designed immersive narratives for keymaps, integrating lore and environmental storytelling to enhance player immersion. Each map reflects the game's factions, motives, and the larger universe, creating a cohesive connection between gameplay and the story.

Civitas

A web3-powered, community-owned city-building strategy game where I created intricate lore, pivotal characters, and branching story events to enhance player-driven storytelling.

Highlights include:

  • World-Building: Crafted a rich, interconnected lore for the game’s factions and land mechanics, emphasizing strategic depth and player choice.
  • Character Development: Designed the Chosen, pivotal characters who influence land development, efficiency, and strategic gameplay.
  • Narrative Integration: Wrote branching story events and gameplay elements that encouraged players to engage with the evolving world of Civitas.

Civitas - Tower Video Teaser

For this video the goal was to showcase the Civitas Tower. A place that was more than structure —it’s a thriving hub for collaboration, storytelling, and community-building, essential to the game’s core experience. 

I collaborated with animators and sound designers to ensure the script aligned seamlessly with the video’s pacing and visuals

Civitas - Characters

These are characters from Civitas that I helped rewrite backstories, traits, and personalities. Each character is a Chosen, and all have an enlightened version of themselves that also have separate backstories, traits and personalities as they have gone through enlightenment.

Civitas Environmental Dialogue

These are examples of dialogues or expressions of the workers doing their assigned jobs around your land. The idea was that players would hear workers talk amongst themselves as they pan in and out and around a worker or building.
